HELP CUMMINS STARTER NOT MATTING UP

I have a 91.5 Cummins with an adapter plate of a 94 -98 dodge with a cummins and a nv4500. I m trying to use the starter out of the 91 and the noise of the starer is hitting the bell housing when it trys to kick in

Not sure but NV may have a specific starter, I'd go on one of the parts sites and check it out.

the diff is they are timed and the center of the gear is not the center of the the hole in the adapter plate

why could they not make them all the same
