Definitely, buying a donor vehicle is always better.

When I bought my '91 Dodge Cummins automatic 2WD donor truck, I had no idea how much the rear end was worth. I'm glad I found out before I scrapped it with the frame. The rear was a D70 with 3.07s, which you can't buy anywhere, you gotta find them used. I put it on craigslist and a guy drove all the way from PA to buy it and the starter that same day, for $650. I sold the 3 speed auto for $350, and had the rest of the truck sitting out by the road. I could hardly get work done on my Bronco with so many people stopping by for parts! When all was said and done, there was just a frame and shell of the cab left for the scrapper, and I made $1500 from selling the pieces, AND I got the Cummins for my truck. I only paid $1300 for it!
So I got paid 200 dollars to take a 159k mile perfect running Cummins motor. It's pretty hard to beat that.
