what engine to use
I am building a 2 ton 72 GMC. The frame I got had a 5.9 cummins in it. I got the rearend it was a rockwell with 3.73 gears. So what motor to use? 6v53,671,453 Detroit, E6 Mack,Cat or 5.9,8.3 or L10 Cummins.
I was looking for something that has good power,tq, and fuel mileage plus I would like to install a Jake brake (engine compression brake)

"the frame is doubled and out of a F600 and the wheels are a wide 8 lug 19.5" Not sure what this has to do with anything here. Again, what are you planning to do with the truck. A truck is a tool. Decide what you want to accomplish then figure out how to do it. If you want power or torque, you might as well cross off the first three engines you mention. Pick from the rest but keep in mind those are all different too.

I love my mechanical diesel!!! 15 years ago I stuffed a 270 horse version DTA466 into my 1984 E-350, charge air aftercooled with an RTO6610 Fuller 10 speed. Over the years broke 3 sets of rings and pinions in the one weak link Dana 61 axle (3.08 gears) Currently swapping in a Spicer S-135 out of a C5500 Chev. 2.93 gears and a locker. Custom built air bag suspension in the rear. SUCH A VERSATILE ENGINE!!! Great choice guys for a severe modification!! Extremely dependable, this one lights in 10 degree weather, no ether and I don't miss the glow plug system that the original 6.9 liter had!
