Default first gen 12v transmission questions

thinking about putting a first gen 12 valve in my 1997 F-250. iv found several 12v 5speed dodges for decent money but iv heard the manual transmissions behind the first gens werent the strongest. i was wandering if the bell housing is the same on all the 5.9 cummins. would it be possible or worth it to put a newer heavier duty 5 or 6 speed behind it?

The Getrag is just as strong as a NV4500.

Overfill it by a quart, don't lug it in gear towing (good advice for any manual tranny)

If you still want to swap... The later model trannys use a different adapter plate and starter, just get them when you get the tranny.
