I'm not knocking the p-pump, I searched hard for one, but my truck will eventually be at 5-600hp; it suits my goals better.
Thats a very good point, but if his goals change in the future then he may want the p pump then, either way good luck with the conversion

its all in the heads before I had my head gasket go out on my p pump it would start hard the guy that did my head work really understood how to grind valves on a diesel and now it starts as good or better than our 91 ve
It's not necessarily the head that makes the VE start easier than the P-Pump, although I'm sure the work you had done to the P-Pump truck helped. There is a difference in the way the two pumps fuel during starting, and the dynamic timing has a big impact on it.

It's a matter of which one you can find easier and cheaper but my $.02 is the P-pump for one simple reason, no matter what your initial plans are you will only be happy with it for so long. I originally wanted to level out around 400 HP and had no intention of going higher, now that I dynoed at 396 my new goal is 550, thankfully my gf has kept me in line and made me focus on the drag truck. I'm not going higher on the screw cab, but that doesn't mean I don't want to.
