I had a friend that put a small diesel in an older escort wagon, looked like crap but got about 55mpg. Anything is possible with enough time, patience, and money.

Sounds like an interesting project. I would think it's a long term goal. Lots of trial and error.

i saw someone do this a while ago, was a guy in baltimore, i almost bought the car. he used an imported toyota 2liter or so diesel from a dude in florida, it was a half finished project.

mb 6/5cyl turbo diesel in jeep wagoneer or 80's jeep that had the straight six and mate it to a 5sp....possible 4x4 but much more work
or maybe an explorer from 80's early 90's.i think a jeep that had a inline 6 might be the easisest to put an inline mb diesel into.i saw a video about a caravan with a vw 1.6 diesel.kinda neat and not a bad idea for a family cruiser.i might get a sprinter van in 10 years when they are in price range...hehee

No he wouldn't. He would be getting the exact same fuel economy, except substituting one fuel type for another.
