my 97 gmc lost a push rod and we found out it is in the oil pan. weve had people tell us to take off the oil pan and get the rod so it doesnt get in the crank shaft. but then people say to just leave it and put my truck back together becasue the rod is to heavy to get picked up by the crank. Its a lot of work to take the oil pan off so i want more opinions before we leave the rod or take it out. thanks.

Are you a gambler? I'm not so sure a pushrod would do anything other than possibly poke a hole in the pan if it did get into the crank, Did you try to fish it out through the drain plug with a good strong magnet, I know it's a long shot but thats what I would look into first.

how did it get past the camshaft???

 

#1 a pushrod does not belong in the oil pan, get it out or do not driveit,unless you like buying expensive parts. Also how do you drive it missing a pushrod? replaced? if so the extra pushrod should been the first thing you did then, replace the the old one.
#2 IF it does hit the crakshaft while your driving down the road, the last thing youll have to worry about is a hole in your oil pan cause it will shred it and disperse small metal shaving and big chunks of meatal all over your lower end , then youll be replacing bearings, if your lucky, and probably a crankshaft. " Tip of the day" do things right and you'll not have to worry about it, if you cant afford it sell it and buy a Geo. Thats the best advice anyone will give you here.
