Question 2005 Duramax Head Gasket

Well...just before christmas...my 2500 sierra caught fire, plugged in overnight.
Nationwide decided to cover the repairs. The roll back co., started truck to center in road, and drove it up the bed...antifreeze pouring out...and engine stressing..not wanting to climb the incline....finally...it was in place. It went to the dealer for repair. Two weeks later I arrived to pick it up... Looking at all the new parts in the top half of the motor, I noticed the new coolant reservoir appeared empty...it was...A service tech was sent out to fill it up. After 15 min.....warming up, as I paid my deductible, and signed a few papers...the heat didn;t warm. They kept truck additional week to figure out....
They say head gasket cracked...and heater core clogged up....and Nationwide refuses repair/s, claiming non related to the fire.
I pleaded my case about the starting/driving issues, and thought for sure it had something to do with the issues. As the service guy was filling the resevoir...he said that he suggested the dealer buy the truck and put in museum, as it was first truck that was able to be driven into the service bay...even after a fire under the hood. They allowed me to take to an independent shop for review to get opinion on the possibility of the fire/starting/driving, could have caused the head gasket issue.....They could offer no explination that Nationwide would consider. So I'm stuck.....
After inquiring with seven shops....4 dont want anything to do with...one works on all models other than 2005....and the few that do...have quoted 4-6000$ for the repair.
REALLY?
What is so different about the 2005 duramax?
I also have found out...from a few friends that this year is notorious for head gaskets....and I'm at 130K miles......
Can anybody offer any explination if the processes involved could have caused this?
The dealership said I've had the cracked head gasket for a while.....but I think I would have noticed.....
I was told that the heater core was an easy fix with a backflush...but its the least of my worries right now!

Does GM have any re-calls on this? I'm thinking of complaining to them about the cost of the repair....I'm getting quotes for 04, and 06 to see how much difference is to the 05.

any help would be great.

as it stands.....I have bubbles blowing back...into the coolant reservoir!

any head gasket repair in a bottle to get me by for a bit?

bob in baltimore!
