Is there a symptom or just "the sound"?

If it is a compression leak, you could trace it further with a leak-down test.

Sure it's not normal? It is a Diesel, after all...

Exhaust leak? Manifold gasket?

I'd say compression check at the least if you are worried about it. More then likely a leaky gasket or exhaust.
