Default Power steering issue...?

Hello all....I have a 93 2WD 3/4 Dodge with 12v Cummins and auto...

Here at the beginning of the week, I noticed my P.S. getting very Non responsive....?

When First fired up stone cold there is no PS. if I let it idle and warm up for 5 mins or more
It comes back, but real sluggish.

once I am moving, and Engine is off idle it gets better, but there is the typical PS whine to it....It is full of Fluid, no leaks.....Fluid is old and dirty, so I am going to flush it,

Is there anything else to do, or look for...? One of my local Buds says there May be a Bypass valve in the pressure side of the PS pump not doing its job..? Ie. It is staying open in bypass mode, and not shutting to Go into work mode..? Can this be cleaned, or is it new Pump time..?

Thanks, John

sounds like the pump is just getting weak if it gets better when the fluid warms and at higher rpms. i think my new pump i had to put on was only like 45 bucks it wasnt too bad

There is a bypass in the pump fitting where the hose hooks to the pump that takes the load off when you are not steering. You can take the hose off and remove the fitting from the pump and clean the parts. After the fitting is removed the valve is behind it with a spring behind that. If cleaning it dosen't help it is probably time for a new pump.
