Default '00 Cummins CKP Issue

Howdy all... Weird one here, but maybe someone's seen it before. My brother has a 2000 Ram 3500 that I just installed a used engine (due to the cracked "53" block). Swap went fine, but the replacement engine had a plastic plug where the crank sensor should be. Removed plug, installed CKP sensor, and installed original engine harness. Now, we have a CKP sensor code (P0336), and the engine has very little power. From what I can tell by sticking my finger in the CKP hole, there is no tone wheel. Tried pulling signal from the cam sensor, but the CMP reads #1 TDC, and the CKP reads 60 deg. before TDC. So... am I screwed, or is there a fix other than installing another engine with a tone wheel? Thanks for any advise...

The used engine is out of a 2001 Ram3500, but it must be the later style that used the cam sensor to set timing. I've found that I can buy the tone wheel separately, but would the later crank accept the tone wheel, and if so, does it involve a complete teardown (crank removal) to install?

I would say yes, it would involve a complete teardown. I had the same issue with an engine swap in an Isuzu Rodeo. Installed the complete engine and found no tone ring. Mine wouldn't even start. I wound up having to pull the engine and put a different one in.

Don't know if it's the same for yours, but the crank on the one I did was machined for the tone wheel to fit whereas the other crank/engine wasn't. I would think it would be easier to swap it back out then teardown and install a tone ring. just my .02
