Default Temp Gauge?

ok driving the truck today and randonly the coolant temp gauge decides to go past 240 degrees, i checked it agains my pulse and it was still at 188 degrees.... sooo i unpluged the sensor and it still goes to 240... wtf? do i have a short some where? its throwing a code and pissing me off cuz i dont like my dash looking like a christmas tree

is there a seperate temperature sensor for the gauge and the computer? i know a few vehicles have 2 like that. the Box might be reading off the one for the computer and the one for the gauge is flakey...... just a thought

Stupid question here I'm sure. Are you sure the temp guage wire is plugged into the engine block. If not the sensor/terminal may be just layin on the engine block itself and readin the outside temp on it instead of coolant temps.

did it throw an 0217? engine not performing corectly due to over heating? I'd say you may have a faulty sensor or a short.
