Question 89 suburban diesel conversion

i'm in CA and have an 89 low miles 3/4 ton suburban that had a 350. i'm going to put a diesel in it and willneed to go to a smog referee to get the registration changed. my unerstanding is that anything the same year or newer and same displacement or bigger is o.k. Thought about putting a cummins in but not looking forward to possible headaches trying to get everything in and working right. have a 92 599 6.5 block/motor that has 190k and needs a little work. not sure how much i would need to put into it $ to make it a dependable, decent power source. was going to bolt it up to a 700r thatwill come out of an older suburban. any sound advice would be appreciated.

i'd rather get a cummins than a 6.5 with an electrical Stanadyne pump, these are a hazzle...

If you get a 12valve Cummins they are fully mechanical...

one wire here and one wire there... bump the starter and it's good to go...

but welcome to DB.... you will find tons of info and everyone here is in it to help you...

You will want to post in the Chevy/GMC section or Diesel Conversion section...

Thanks for he input. I've heard this from others too, was hoping to do it cheaper as between picking up a good engine and all the conversion parts it adds up fast. i have a 92 block and was going to go all mechanical. How is the weather in Iceland?

Cold as suspected.... but rather warm for this time of year

Mechanical is the way to go, i'm currently working on converting my dad's 6.5 to a fully mechanical setup

Did you get your conversion started or completed? I have a '94 burb w/ 6.5 diesel w/ 190k mi. and love it. I did the cooling system upgrades and it runs like a champ. Not big HP but runs strong w/ good MPG

Default just getting started

got my 89 low mile burb chassis, engine tranny & t-case out, got a low mile (30K) 94 hummer mechanical 6.5, got a 2001 4L80e out of a hummer, will use the t-case from the 89 chassis, ordered a Bauman electronics controller for the tranny and various gaskets and seals for the motor, doing some prep work to the chassis and motor. will be taking my time and going slow. still not sure what i want to do about boost, have a belt driven turbo i may put on, don't think i want to go throught the trouble of putting in a turbo.
