94 6.5L turbo 1/2 ton chevy
Hi guys,
Since I bought this truck I've had a problem three or four times with getting fuel to the engine.
It's been an ongoing issue. Unhooked the fuel line and no fuel flowing from the tank. Simply blowing back into the tank with air allowed the fuel to start flowing.(dirty sock in the tank?) replaced the fuel filter not long ago and is decent shape now. This time driving down the road it quit again, first check was as normal loosen the bleeder on the filter and it is like a fountain this time, where when problems before there was none.
Cracked an injector line and no fuel when winding over. (only checked the one) The injection pump was replaced by the last owner 3 years ago. When it quit this time I thought I heard a "ping" type noise.
Checked the solenoid or whatever on top of the injection pump and it appears to be working (clicking).
Now when winding over it sounds like she wants to start but like not enough fuel. Shot of ether is supposed to be a nono but I tried anyway removing the little plug and giving it a shot right in the intake, tried into the the air filter first and nothing. Same result a little cough like she wants to start and some whiteish color smoke is coming out when winding over.
Next step is a tow to someone but having four kids funds are a little tight. No real experience with diesel's before so I'm a little lost. Can anyone enlighten me with other things I can check? Is my injection pump plugged up this time? Any help is appreciated.

the glowplugs and controller have been replaced in the last couple months. It was working great, -30c starts with a little white smoke but cleared within a minute or two. Going down the road there was never any smoke unless you were to step her down and some black smoke came out till you let off a bit. I am assuming this is normal. Always started right up as soon as you cranked her when the glow plugs light went out.

is the lift pmp working?
sometimes if you get no fuel at the injector it can be a PMD issue
check for leaks in the fuel lines
could be the sock in the tank too

yes the lift pump is working, it's hook up direct to the key switch atm so on when key is, can hear it and when open the valve on top of the fuel filter it flows like a fountain so the sock is ok now but has plugged up before. No leaks in the fuel lines. Is the a way to check/test the pmd? It's hasnt been relocated like I've seen alot do.

didn't mention
Forgot to mention that when I open the drain valve there's a free flow of clean fuel coming out with the key on. So there is fuel at the back with the filter and up front by the thermostat on the water/dirt drain valve. Is this drain valve before the IP coming right from the filter?
Another note, tried checking for codes by jumping a and b on the connector like pictured I saw in this forum and the check engine light didn't blink just stayed on.

The water drain is from the bottom of the fuel filter bowl.
The sock could be an intermittent problem. Clogging while running and heavy draw, crap dropping off when tested at a standstill. That's a bit of a long shot though.
How is the last chance screen in the filter manager? Clean, clogged, missing altogether?
PMD is always a likely culprit on these rigs. Unfortunately, swapping in a working one is the only real way to trouble shoot it.
If you have time, you can pick up a used one on eBay for around 30-40 bucks. It's not a "fix", but it should be good enough to use as a trouble shooting method without spending 400-500 bucks on a new one...then toss it in the dash as a spare "get me out of trouble" in case your new one gives up the ghost in the future.
I've got a used one in my glove box. I consider having a spare PMD more important than having a spare tire on these trucks.....especially if you're got 4 kids you haul around in it.
Nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the high way with your kids when a quick click of an electrical connector could at least get you mobile enough to get to the next exit....

Where are you located?
I'm agreeing with trying a known to be good PMD.
Grounds are also key on these vehicles. I add grounds to the battery box & then down to the frame by the starter - one wire. I also add a ground to the ground stud at the back of the engine by the firewall. The third ground I add is to the dash support right next to the heater blower, from the heater blower ground. I use a 3 way spade connector.
I also add a ground to the relocated PMD
I get my PMD's & extension cables from PMDcable.com
