Question Information on putting a turbo onto a 6.5 non-turbo diesel motor.

I am new to this diesel forum. I am looking for help.

I bought a 1998 Chevy crew cab 4X4 dually with a bad 6.5 turbo diesel motor ( VIN "F" motor ). I decided to replace the motor. I began looking for another 6.5 turbo diesel motor, but I didn't have any luck. I found a 6.5 non-turbo diesel motor out if a 1995 Chevy 1 ton van with 148,000 miles ( VIN "Y" motor ). I was told that this 95 6.5 non-turbo diesel motor would work as a long block assembly in my 98 dually. That means that the block, rotating assembly and heads from the non turbo are the same as your turbo engine as long as you swap the intake, exhaust, water pump, fuel system, electronics, and turbo.

I started looking for a diesel mechanic to do the swap of intake, exhaust, water pump, fuel system, electronics, and turbo. Some diesel mechanics say this will work and other diesel mechanics say it will not work.

I am looking for information and help from someone else who has installed a turbo onto a 6.5 non-turbo diesel motor. I would appreciate any information on other parts I will need to change over that are not listed above. I have had a few people say that the heads on the 98 6.5 turbo diesel motor ( VIN "F" truck motor ) are different then the 95 6.5 non-turbo diesel motor ( VIN "Y" 1 ton van motor ). I would appreciate any more information about this.

Thanks

ive never done it but i know for a fact it will work and all the things you said are correct. not sure on the heads but i would use the heads from the 98 if there salvagble just because they will have bigger pre combustion chambers for better performace. you might also have to tap a oil line so the turbo can get oil. when you do this i would suggest using headstuds instead of bolts just becasue there stronger and more reliable. get new turbo injectors too.
