I agree, with epa and legislation gettin more tough all the time it is giving the diesel world a bad rap. But these guys are right, there is more to a diesel than just makin it roll black smoke. Im sure that if you wanted to make some more power, these guys would be more than happy to help with that issue. I'm also new on here and ive only made one post in which i got a response on in less than two hours. It was very good advice and they told me exactly what i wanted to know. Im already a big fan of this site. Thanks woody35 for answering to my thread.

hey averybody thanks for all the replies. i did not mean to come off rude at all, i understand and have heard this was the greatest diesel site around thats why i have come to you guys. now the question you asked was what we are working with. well my buddy's family owns a company that is lucky enough to be sponsored by alot of big name brand diesel companies. he has a shop and a diesel mechanics luicense and quite a few toys, or should i say quite a few trucks. me and him recently finished up a 2003 F-350 that would dump on a corvettes face in a drag. so we went out and found a 98' 2500 chevy in really REALLY good shape. we have mostly worked on powerstroke and duramax and dont know much about the old 6.5s. we are just lookin to play around with it a little and see what we can do. power upgrades and such ya know. so any help would be awesome.

thanks alot guys

unfortunately, the 6.5L is not a very sought after diesel engine due to its performance, unlike a cummins (which is extremly detuned from the factory) the 6.5L is not. hopefully woody35 will chime in here he seems to be the 6.5 guru from what ive seen. but it never hurts to unchoke the factory air intake and exhaust for starters. i know the PMD is also good to relocate, and like woody said earlier, the factory computer being reflashed can help alot too. but with it being a 1998 model you got to be careful, because within the next few years all 98 and newer diesels will be having to smog throughout the states.

computer reflash, exhaust, air intake is very high flowing from the factory so your good there. lift pump like a walbro or a lift pump from a 1993 model which flows more are good choices . only need about 7-8 psi of fuel pressure for the lift pump. anything bigger is overkill.

dropping compression down to 18:1 can be a good power adder. then a hx35 turbo or anything that flows similar is a good fit. then you need arp headstuds. dont go over 28 psi or bad things will happen. also need intercooler. water/meth, propane, and little bit of nitrous are good injectables to have. again be CAREFUL!! since a 6.5 is indirect injection too many injectables can cause predetonation which isnt a good thing. tuning is very key. start low and work your way up.

also forgot they offer marine injectors but they dont do much if anything. also another mod called feed the beast is a good one. fuel line going from fuel manager to ip is very small and can cause a slight vaccum under accerlation. get larger fuel line and vaccum will go away.

thats about all you can do for a electronic 6.5 and without custom parts. there are more options if you go mechanical fuel injection but those terriortys have not been explored much and no aftermarket company sells them. that means you ahve to make all the parts or the machine shop. if your not a good engineer or have no idea i would not try it. there is a few 6.5s running around with custom valvetrain, intake manifolds, girdles, block reinforcement, and custom turbo sytems.

getting more fuel out of a 6.5 is a mystery that will not be solved by using stock inejction pumps. your going to have to p pump it or find a way to mount twin rotary injection pumps. a guy in switzerland did it. but once you do that who knows when the block will blow. a guy in canada though is building a full billit block.

bottom line is that a 6.5 is a light duty diesel engine were as the cummins, dmax, and powerstroke are medium duty. in that case you have to treat it as a light duty. world record 6.5 power that has been dynoed is 303 hp and 598 ft lbs of torque. a stock lbz dmax can make that

thanks woody appreciate the help. and one other thing, the truck runs real good once it gets goin however if lets say i run it for 10 minutes go into a grocery store and come out 10 mins later it wont start, and if it does it will start idle for a couple seconds and then die, it will even die while im driving it =/. i believe we did the right thing by getting a new PMD/solinoid for the truck because that seems to be the problem, it wont be here for a couple days so ill have to deal with it for now. when i start it in the morning though it starts fine. if we have to we might just put on whole new injection pump. let me know your thoughts

thanks

put the pmd on there and see if it cures your problems. if not its probably fuel related. remember to put pmd on heatsink on the inside of the bumper
