Default 6.2 Diesel Turbo Project

I know its been beat over the head but:

I have a 1993 nonturbo 6.2 with A/C

My neighbor has a 1997 6.5 just hanging out behind his house with a perfectly good turbo, exhaust manifold etc in it and its not running nor will he be fixing it.

Now can I get a list of what i would need to scavenge off this 6.5 for a kit to bolt on to my own 6.2

The greater detail the better. This includes if I may need to fab anything. Note this truck has A/C so im unsure if it would need modification to put this turbo on.

Really appreciate it guys. Send some wisdom to a young diesel enthusiast.

I believe the 97 has the A/C compressor on the driver side (but the A/C lines may be in the way) and uses a GM8 turbo. Make a turbomaster. If you search for it, I have a thread on here showing the turbomaster I made.

Use the turbo, turbo oil feed (and the adapter in the block) and return lines, mechanical fuel pump block off/oil return plate, exhaust manifolds, and crossover pipe, upper and lower intake manifold and bolts for all of the prementioned.

If that upper intake manifold utilizes EGR and manifold pressure sensors, take them out and either aluminum weld, JB weld, or make cover plates to close up those holes.

Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware and the like carry the fittings you need to "Tee" into your OPS sensor port to feed the turbo with oil. I used a male-female-female 1/4" Tee. I put my OPS in the end pointing up (this aids in OPS change out because the OPS is then higher and easier to get a wrench on).On the side output of the Tee (facing the passenger side of the block), I adapted to 1/8" and used 45 degree fittings, couplers, and 6" brass pipe and routed it around the fuel filter manager and under the intake along the base of the head. At the front, adapted back to 1/4 with a 90 degree fitting facing up and then the adapter to the feed line.

Your 93 should not have a mechanical lift pump, but instead an electric lift pump on the frame. If it does happen to have a mechanical lift pump, you will have to acquire an electric one and the necessary fittings, hose and electric supplies, or route your oil return straight into the pan. I would not suggest doing this though, but nonetheless, it is still an option.

You will have to turn the fuel up on your injection pump (IP) approximately 1/8 to 3/8 of a turn. Search for this procedure and choose the option of removing the side plate. Your will have the intake off, and it is really easy to do. Using the 97 IP will not be an option because it is computer controlled and you don't want that headache.

If your engine uses the long fuel injectors, the turbo exhaust manifold will just barely fit, but it is not advisable to do so. The injectors would get very hot and vapor lock quite often (don't ask how I know ). Instead, locate a set of short 6.2 injectors. You will have to either acquire set of injector lines for the short 6.2 injectors, or bend the ones you have. Using a closed end wrench, and a LOT of care, it is very easy to bend these lines. The 6.5 injector lines can be used, but the internal diameter between the two sets is different. While the 6.5 injectors can be used on a 6.2, the 97 6.5 injectors have a different pop pressure than the 6.2 pump puts out. I believe it is in the neighborhood of about 300 psi difference.

I think that I have covered everything. Anyone else care to share?

I was told that sticking a 4911 Manual Injection Pump would give it the get up and go that I want. Any thoughts?

The 4911 is the 6.5 turbo mechanical IP. With the 6.5 injectors, yes it will. I would do it, but it would take a little bit more money to get it all together.

That pump will work with the 6.2 injectors but your timing marks will not be accurate and it will act a little weird, probably black smoke a bit and cause high EGTs
