Default Do I need to replace the pulley when replacing the vacum pump on my 96 GMC3500? Help!

I have finally determined that the vacuum pump has gone bad on my 963500 with 197K miles. I have a new vacuum harness and a new waste gate solenoid installed now and a good line down to the pump - just very little to no vacuum being produced.

So I am pricing new/replacement vacuum pumps and they also sell the "pulley" separate. Mine is good and to my knowledge true (not unbalanced) so do I need to spend another $55 on a new pulley or can I just swap over the one I have on the truck now?

Any help is appreciated - also any advice on the job is appreciated. It seems pretty straight forward to get in or should I say get under and do it. But is there anything I should be aware of before starting the job of replacing the pump out? And what about the pulley - need a new one?

Thank you!

~GOD BLESS~

The pulley can be swapped over-you will need a power steering pulley puller/installer to make the changeover.

Most parts stores with a loan a tool program should have it or you can buy 1 for a small fee.

be sure to measure how far the original pulley is installed on the shaft and replicate that when you move it over to keep belt alignment true.

Default Thank you - Do you know if the threads are reversed or regular? ..

I will use the loan a tool for the puller and then install the used pulley in the same spot on the new vacuum pump to keep the belt alligned - would not have thought of that - Thank you very much!

Are the threads on the pulley to vacuum pump bolt regular or reversed?

Thanks again!

Threads are for the installer-there usually isn`t a bolt there.

I think they are standard though.

Default Well you can tell I haven't had my eye on the pump yet...

Good to know about needing a puller AND that there is no bolt holding the existing pulley on.

I assumed that the pulley was just bolted on and I could just unbolt and replace it onto the new vacuum pump. So it is pressed on and then I need to make sure I press the old pulley onto the new pump at the same distance as the old one to keep the belt alligned.

I am about 2 1/2 weeks out from doing the swap. Thanks for helping me be ready ahead of time. I appreciate it.

~GOD BLESS~
