The exhaust gaskets are only made to make money.

Do not use them-get the manifolds planned straight and torque them to spec with the proper fasteners.

These engines a very low boost engines and the stock turbo is not efficient so if you keep things sealed the losses will be minimal.

 

When working on a project, such as rebuilding an engine, I find it hard to stop, take a picture, and then continue. I get into the swing of things and forget that I am supposed to take pictures to post here. I took a few last night right as I quit for the night...... let's see if I can get them to work...

To start it off, as I started disassembling the lifters, I snapped a picture so that I could put the darn things back together correctly.


Next up is two pictures of the painted heads, with valve covers set on top.





Now to set in the injectors and a line to really show the color scheme.


Now this is that point where things really started to flow and I simply forgot to snap pics along the way. So here iit is with heads, all of the valvetrain, valve covers and the timing setup installed.







I know the front cover looks dirty, but unless I spend hours on it with sandpaper and a wire brush, that crap ain't coming off. And I really didn't want to paint that, so it just looks how it does and thats final.

 

Got the engine in the truck a few days ago. I had to change the oil cooler lines because one or both were leaking. No oil leaks now!! YAY!! Truck runs great!

I used the 6.5 IP and had 6.5 turbo long injectors but I ended up switching to the 6.2 short injectors and retarding the IP timing. Now I runs amazing. Better than I ever dreamed. Well worth the $1700 I put into the rebuild.

only $1700? very nice. iv been hearing everyone say 3-4 grand for a rebuild on one of these 6.2/6.5 engines. i hope i can do one for less than that im probably going to spend $2000 rebuilding mine, not going for power or anything its just a daily driver but id like to have it be reliable for another 200K if i can.

As for the price, I got a great deal on a new set of 0.020 over pistons with all new bearings and gaskets. Typically those are around $1200 and I got mine for $700. Then $325 to have the block hot tanked, bored and honed, and have new freeze plugs, cam bearings, oil galley plugs, and oil filter bypass valve installed. I did all the disassembly, cleaning and painting, port matching, and reassembly myself (with some help from a couple of family members).

 

Glad to see you are getting her together Chris, I waxed mine last Saturday for the first time since owning it thinking I would ride to town in a clean ride all went well until I started her up to leave and wound up having to buy 2 new batteries but all is well now
