Help needed please - What is best place to relocate a new PMD?
#11
Based on those pics...
I'd say they did relocate the ground wire to the side of the heat sink. The end of the wire looks the same as the one I have on the heat sink now. I'll move it back over. Looks like torx screws that hold the cover to the IP in place? Is that right?
Thank you for the pictures - they help me a lot.

Excellent - Thank you! Few more questions came to mind.
Great! All I need now is a break in the rain. We have been poured on for days. I should have time over the weekend and can always get a little wet if needed.
I usually disconnect the batteries when doing something like this - is that wise or can I leave them connected?
Also once I restart the truck is there any reccomended amount f time to let it run or drive a certain distance to let it 'relearn' anything as far as the electronics go?
Thank you for your help!

Doesn't matter where you mount it. Sooner or later it will probably fail. Mount it somewhere you can get to it easy for a side of the road change and carry a spare one. The only way to fix it permanently is to relocate it to the dumpster and put a Mech IP on.
I would not run a Dtech. I have had more failures with them and the failures were catastrophic. Google Flight Systems runaway throttle.
The old Black Standynes were the best but they are no longer made.
I had a Dtech fail and the motor was rocking back and forth surging so bad I thought it was gonna tear the motor mounts loose.

DTech, WAP, Dipaco, DieselRx etc etc are all rebadged Flight Systems. They are garbage in my opinion. I have had 3 fail personally not to mention countless stories of others I know.
I have read Failures of the Grey Standyne but I would roll the Dice on that first.
Like I said...Google Flight Systems runaway

There is no best PMD and you have what is as good as anything else if you bought new.
If you bought used I wouldn't go to the trouble to install it if you are trying to diagnose a problem.
If your truck was running fine then try a used one out and run it for quite a while, get the engine up to operating temp and test the hot start ability repeatedly and watch out for stalling.
No need to disconnect the batteries as long as no one turns the key on.

Finished install of extension harness and new PMD on old FSD Heat Sink
Thank you for all the help. I finished the install and sorry for the lack of pictures, but camera needs batteries - go figure.
I did find that the previous owner when they installed the FSD heat sink on the intake manifold had moved the ground wire to the side of the heat sink. So I relocated it back onto the top of the IP as it should be grounded.
Ran the new 6' harness down the drivers side and down to the front bumper. I decided the best place was under the lip of the bumper from the underside of the truck. Drilled out a factory hole in the bumper and drilled one new one and then snugged it down (the heat sink) with new hardware. It is mounted just inside of the opening in the front of the bumper but a bit behind the plastic air dam that is inside there. I made sure that I can reach the connector if I have to change out in a roadside situation. I went ahead and ran with the new Flight Systems unit I bought and so far (1 full week of driving including daily 80 mile comuting) it has worked great. The PMD stays cool being every so slightly warm to the touch - not hot at all. It get air flow from the factory fan and should get a good amount when up to speed on the road.
For back up I am carrying in the Burb' 2 used black Stayndines that I got off of ebay with a 2 month warranty on each. Plenty of zip ties and the correct sized wrenches and allen wrenches.
I appreciate all the help you provided and will let you know if I experience and issues with the set up.
Thank you all!
