When I got my wheels put on my truck, the shop told me to check the torque 20 or 30 miles later.

you need the lug nuts with the collar that go inside that extra space around the stud.. oh and the steel washer..

^^ Bingo. Your nuts are wrong. Also, I too have never had to "re-torque" my alloy wheel lug nuts.

So how do those nuts center the wheel?

I actually think your tapered nuts would work with those wheels. One problem you have is your studs are too short, you should be able to see threads on your studs when the lug nuts are tightened up. As far as the shop tellin you to retorque it's probably in the fine print on your invoice.

How does one know what nuts are used on what wheels?

The studs are long enough to fully engage all the threads on the lugnuts... Before they back themselves off. That wheel was very lose as well.

those style rims are lug centric I believe, the collar on the lug nut fits tight through the rim in between the lug.. they can be a pain to get all wiggled into place sometimes.

They're all loose by a turn or so in that picture.

As I said, they were all fully engaged when the wheel was installed.
