I just remember why I love this country. Not saying I agree with everything, I don't. But consider the alternatives out there:

I am thankful I am an American!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
I know people fought and died so I can enjoy the respect and freedom I do have as an American, even tho it's not perfect. I think it's right to show respect for them, and for what is good about America.
And you can bet your sweet **** I will put my hand over my heart when it's time to say the Pledge or when I hear the National Anthem.

Opinions Are Like You Know What
That's the thing about keyboard commandos and respect - it's not really public. They can get away with saying things and posting insulting nonsense from behind a computer that would probably get their ***** kicked in public.

I am just disappointed no matter where this tradition started that those that have given so much are not given the respect they deserve . I do it out of respect and patriotism . I do it for the men and women who have given their life limb other family members so you can have the right not to. Just wish those that don't respect this tradition would not excersize this right in public.
Personally, I take my hat off and bow my head when the Anthem is sung/played. I'm not a citizen here, but it's just basic respect as far as I'm concerned. I've been to football games where citizens of this country don't take their hat off, stay sitting, talk loudly etc etc during the Anthem. That ticks me off a bit. But what do you do? As you say, people are allowed to do that in this 'free' country.
And Nadir Point, before you go saying I'm 'backpeddling' again, maybe you ought to try and figure out what I'm saying and where I'm coming from instead of labeling me a left-wing tree-hugging pinko or whatever. It's my experience that the ones who talk the loudest have the most to hide.

I think I'll do the Bellamy salute at the next NASCAR race I go to, just like my grandpa was taught to do in school. I bet people will enjoy that!
And on another note, the American national anthem isn't supposed to be a somber or solemn event. It's the most ridiculous, over-the-top song national anthem in the world. Moshing would be more suiting for it. Maybe jazz hands. We should all do jazz hands.
