It is a lot simpler than you think. It sounds terrible but most of this is just download a program, install on phone, and then your good to go. The only catch is the whole deal about updating the Operating system on the phone. If you do, you will have to re do the whole process

 

Does the iphone only work with AT&T. If so we're dead in the water because the only providers we have in this area is US Cellular and Verizon

Looks like apple has a exclusive deal set with AT&T through 2010 to be the only provider

 

Verizon doesnt utilize a sim card for their phone services like AT&T. Does US cellular use sim cards?? If so you should e able to exploit the fact that the iphone takes a sim card and when/if your exchange student allows you to jail-break his iphone he should able to get service thru U.S. Cellular. Just make sure you get the multimedia package. iphone uses quite a bit of data for apps and what not.

 

If he already has the phone you should be able to get a month to month plan for that phone... It is about $100.00 a month for the Iphone plan and only through ATT.

The 2 year commitments are for purchasing a phone at a reduced rate.. I think the price of an iphone is around $700.00.. you can purchase it with a plan for $199..

 

The iPhone 4 uses a compact sim and It is removable.

Jailbreak the phone and use BootNeuter to unlock it, then use the sim card from any US Cellular phone to activate the iPhone.

Or you buy him a dinky dial phone, and tell him tough chit and let him only use the iphone on wireless or as a mp3 player, and have the other phone to make phone calls.

 

US Cellular doesn't use sim cards I really don't want to pay $100 a month for this kid to use his iphone. I'm leaning towards just getting him a trac phone to use while he is here. Or maybe I can just put him on RedRattlers phone plan I knew I would come up with a plan

 

Go for it, I have an iPhone but why would you have to pay for his bill? Pretty sure his rents get the bill every month If your worried what it would be to call his phone which had the fubar overseas number, just send him text messages and I know your old man mind can handle that since I get a few from ya

 

I don't have to pay for his bill but his parents would and I'm sure I can come up with something a hell of a lot cheaper than what it would cost them. And I never even gave it a thought as to what it would cost me to call him with a overseas number Text messages is a good idea
