Hey guys, I have a MTX Audio X702 amp in my truck. I wired it with the high side input instead of RCA's because my Eclipse head unit doesnt have RCA outs for some reason. It has run like a champ for over two years now. Yesterday, the amp went out and I have tried everything to get it up and going. I have 12v at the positive terminal, 12v at the remote terminal when the head unit is on, and a good solid ground. There are new fuses all the way around. The amp doesnt power up, and the subs obviously don't work now. I opened up the amp to look at the circuit board (obviously the warranty is up). The attached pic is what I found. I was told by a local audio guy that the yellow goo was assembly glue (never heard that before). I thought the two capacitors were looking a little fried. Im thinking the amp is shot and its time to upgrade.

The guy is right the yellow stuff is assembly glue, use to hold the choke or coil in place. As far as the condition it is hard to tell anything from a picture but for the cost of repairing one it is usually cheaper to replace. Good luck

Do you know anything about testing capacitors? I heard you need to remove them from the series to test them. Is that correct?

 

The goo is indeed some assembly glue.

Visual inspection is the easiest way to check. Do any of the caps look swollen ?

Also, I see burnt yellow goo around that diode.
If it doesn't run anymore, you can probably say it's shot, so time for repair or upgrade...

 

The one is definitely burnt, and the one next to it looks swollen. A new one of these amps is $94 or best offer free shipping on eBay so I think I might just buy a new one. I dont know if I can get enough of that assembly glue off to access the diodes that need to be replaced to fix it!

 

What kind of subs you running? I can recommend a good amp for about any power level.

 

that little burnt component is a diode. You have to take it out of circuit in order to test it. If you take it out, the easiest way to check it is to but yout voltmeter on the diode tester. It should beep one way and not the other. this diode ensures that electricity only flows 1 direction and not the other. Sorta like a check-valve in a sump pump line. If it goes out, i have found that things down stream usually have a tendancy to blow as well being that they have power delivered to a point in which they were not intended.
