KDP question
We've all heard discussions on the "killer dowel pin", and how to fix it, and what happens if you don't. I was told by a "reputable" and well known cummins mechanic in my area that I didn't have to worry about it in the 1990 5.9 Cummins that I have.
I read Field Notification # E03003 and it sounds like it is only on P7100 pump engines.
Anyone know for sure?? Better safe than sorry for me. I've seen pics of the damage.

Early Field Notification
Gear Housing or Gear Damage Prevention
Summary of the Early Field Notification
-This document outlines the procedure for correcting and preventing the gear housing locating dowel pin from falling out of the gear housing, possibly resulting in gear housing and/or gear train damage.
Affected Engines
-This problem has only been observed on 6B engines built prior to June 1998 equipped with the Bosch P7100 fuel pump.
Symptoms and Observations
-The following procedure is recommended if a 6B engine with Bosch P7100, inline, fuel injection pump built before June 1998, has the front gear cover removed for any reason. In 1998 the gear housing casting was changed so that the locating dowel pin could not fall out of the housing.
Failure Verification
-Not Applicable
Suspected Cause
-Not Applicable
Potential Component Damage Assessment
-Not Applicable
Repair Instructions
-NOTE: Two versions of the gear housing exist. One version has a raised boss around the dowel hole. The second does not have the boss. Refer to the appropriate corresponding procedure.
Bossed Gear Housing
0. Push dowel pin back into dowel hole.
1. Use a punch to stake the inside of the dowel pin hole so that the created bur prevents the dowel pin from moving in the gear housing.
2. Re-torque all accessible gear housing capscrews to 24 N•m [18 ft-lb].
NOTE: It may be necessary to bar the engine to gain access to the capscrews located behind the cam gear.
Non-bossed Gear Housing
0. Remove the gear housing mounting capscrew located directly adjacent to the locating dowel pin.
1. Install the tabbed waster, part number 3958017, so that the tab covers the dowel pin hole in the housing.
2. Torque the capscrew to 24 N•m [18 ft-lb].
3. Re-torque all accessible gear housing capscrews to 24 N•m [18 ft-lb].
NOTE: It may be necessary to bar the engine to gain access to the capscrews located behind the cam gear.
