"The" 2 Stroke Oil Thread

German military uses 2-stroke oil to add missing lubricity when they use jet fuel instead of Diesel to prevent injector and pump failure
K50---
I'm not bashing personal preferance, for as long as i have been a diesel owner (dodge and ford) I've never had the need for anything that drastic(lack of words)...I just run what i run and have for years no problems. But in my mind, if iam going to buy an "additive" be it 2 stroke oil ect, i want more than just extra lubricaton due to lack of sulphur, i want CTANE! 2 stroke oil dont provide that, nor does it provide a cleaning capability. But I can see the need if you were running JET fuel....

"Lubricationg" and "cleaning" are generally speaking, mutually exclusive concepts. Cleaners are solvents and reduce lubrication. Manufacturers who put a bunch of junk in a fuel additive and tell you it does both is making chemical compromises of some sort and/or relying on uninformed consumers to buy the product.

Nope, 2 stroke is also used when the Diesel No.1 or 2 source is not known.
e.g. allied forces or local sources.
Cetane???
Our cetane numbers in germany are as high as 60 in Shell V Power Diesel fuel and Aral Ultimate Diesel.
Standard Diesel fuel average number is 51 cetane.Exxon still offers one point more than the average.
The difference in noise reduction between those premium fuel and standard Diesel with 2-stroke oil added is still remarkable.
The engine with 2-stroke oil runs still quieter than the engine with the high cetane numbers.
2-stroke oil does not offer cleaning abilities?
Thats what the Mobil 1 Synhetic 2-stroke oil bottle claims on the back side:
- Outstanding wear protection
Extended life for critical engine parts
- Enhanced frictional properties
Improved fuel economy
- Excellent thermal and oxidation stability
Exceptional engine cleaning power resulting in extended valve life, reduced ring sticking, piston tightening and elimination of pre-ignition problems
- Excellent corrosion protection properties
Longest engine life
- Eliminates pre-ignition
Maximises fuel efficiency and extends piston life
- Smoke-free exhaust
Cleaner environment
I expect that for 15,99€ (21.75$) a quart.

Deezl,
IIRC the 2 cycle oil claim that it will clean the valve etc is when it has been mixed with gas and burned in a gas engine, so the $64.00 Q becomes will it clean the same, better or worse when mixed with diesel fuel and burned in a diesel engine. Also why did you list the info about Mobil One Synthetic 2 cycle when most who use it use Dino 2 cycle oil?

Simple, because I only answered it for my special case- I use Synthetics, because Syns are a step ahead of Dino.
It simply doesn't matter at fuel prices as high as 6,57$ a gallon at the moment.
Maybe I can give you a straight and easy answer.
I can't tell how clean it burns in the chamber, until I have taken off the head again.
BUT I can tell by the emission sheet of the safety inspection that it burns cleaner by 60%.
During the winter I had always soot around the end tip of the exhaust during idle visible in the snow.
I don't know what 2 stroke does - but it is completely gone. nada, nichts, nothing to see during idle.
Thats cool.
Maybe you understand when I tell you that I am hyper carefully with my engine. A break down would be a financial desaster. A couple of months ago I wouldn't even allow my girlfriend to put in cheap fuel.
And to be honest, I always had a good smile when I heard about those 2-stroke oil dudes. Now I am one of those too.
My reason to convert was this simple order I got into my hands.
I personal know no other institution like the german military testing so intensive.
Again, I repeat, they tested 2 stroke as an lubing aid, not as a cleaning aid.
I still go with premium fuel to avoid gum and dirt buildup.

I guess this is a learning lesson to me stinker....Thanks for not getting all huffy about it, and just stating facts! I happen to know where some of that full syn 2 stroke oil is...hehe. But normally here our ctane is around 48. You have upwards of 60? wow. The best rating for ctane is 100.
Normal modern highway diesels run best with a fuel rated between 45 and 55. Following is a list cetane numbers varying grades and types of compression ignition diesel fuels:
Regular diesel--48
Premium diesel--55
Biodiesel (B100)--55
Biodiesel blend (B20)--50
Synthetic diesel--55

Don't forget that so called ultimate Diesel is "only" 60 cent per gallon more expensive than standard Diesel.
It's not worth it in my opinion.
With premium fuel I mean Exxon, Shell and those brands.
Not those free gas stations.
You also can get B100 so called RME- but that stuff is agressive to injector pump seals and fuel hoses.it's usually 60cent cheaper than regular Diesel.
All regular fuel has added biodiesel up to 7% by law to preserve oil sources.

Deezel,
If I understand your post above that all diesel there contains 7% Bio, if that is correct then why are you wasting your money adding 2 cycle oil? Its well known that 2% bio gives better lube then 2 cycle oil @ 1 oz per gallon to your fuel and with you having 7% its giving you many times more lube then 2% bio......
