is there anybody here that rebuilds Injector pumps for the 1994 7.3 IDI , im having injector pump issues again, the first time was because the when Joel Woolf from veg powered systems installed my system he cut my steel fuel lines with a hack saw or something and I am not a injector pump expert but I BELIEVE the metal shavings got injested up to the pump and broke the shaft at the weak point breaking the pump. I got the pump rebuilt but it seemed to have no power even after the rebuild Im STUMPED ! now the pump was the issue again and I think it is because Veg Powered Systems only uses one filter Racor Filter with the glass sediment bowl and ONLY A 30 MICRON FILTER was what I found when I changed. So could anybody tell me what is the best micron level to filter my oil to ? what works best on these pumps because I heard some pumps have a screen in them and maybe the screen is plugged up. what micron is diesel fuel filtered to ?

You're running just WVO? How are you heating it, it could be a viscosity issue. How are you filtering your oil as well?

The Donaldson filter on our vegistrokes is 9 micron absolute I believe. Also very good at catching water too. Absolute and nominal micron ratings are very different so be sure to know which you're getting.

The filters elements are Napa Gold and I dont know if it is an absolute or niminal rating, I will have to chase that down. The system has a Heat exchanger but since the whole deal went south from the start I dont know how many plates the heat exchanger has in it but the fuel does get hot....maybe im not letting it heat up enough. I think I will get a vaccum guage and a oil temp guage so I will know exactly what is going on. I am filtering using a 200 micron drum filter but inside that I place 10 micron filter cloth purchased from DUDA DIESEL online. I really think this time around my oil was not filtered down enough. It looks like I will be busy on my day off filtering all 300 gallons I have down to 1 or 3 microns which I know will take a long time but filter time is better than down time and a wad of money ! good thing the Injector pump is still 3 months under the 6 month warranty and it is being pullled and bench tested today There is another company called Fatty Wagons and the owner told me that 30 microns is asking for problems.

Oh to answer the first question I start and stop on diesel then swich to the veggie system once I drive for about 10 minutes.

How are you dewatering the WVO... simply filtering it with bag filters won't get rid of suspended water, which is notorious for killing pumps and injectors. I would either heat/settle or look into a centrifuge.

Have you tested for water? You can do a simple hot pan test, or even take a spoon full of your filtered oil and hold a lighter under it. If you get bubbles, you have water. Water is VERY bad.

Theoretically yes, what temps is it sitting in? Settling is one of the best ways, but ideally heat should be used too. Do the spoon test, that will certainly tell you what is going on and if further improvements need to be made, but from the sounds of it, you'll need a little more than what you're doing now. I know you've checked out my filtration setup at the top of the page. That can be built on the cheap. Find a good used HWH at a local place, or find a plumber who replaces them. I got mine from a guy I work with who was converting to on demand water heater. Converted it to 120V, and got a stainless heating element for $20 or so.

Man ! how long have you been doing this ? That was a very smart idea.....I wish I actually knew someone like you when I started trying to do this .....so far I have spent $ 4,000 on 2 injector pump repairs. The spoon test showed no sign of water in my fuel so Thanks for helping me rule that out. Wouldnt it be great if there was a way an experienced hand could sort of sponser or advise a rookie like me to save a lot of heart ache and money and actually make this hobby enjoyable ! thanks for all the advice.

I've been filtering since ~ 2007ish, and been burning oil since like 2008ish, so still new kind of, just done a TON of research.

Sign up on www.biofuelstechnologies.com there's a lot of good guys on there....

Here is my first protoype I put together for the TIH system, the main idea was to have a linear flow of the fluid and oil so there was not as much friction from a 90* fitting.

Please bear in mind this was the first one I just put together as I went, the sharpie lines are just outlining where I could reduce the size to.
