Canada and Alaska. The gulf has big reserves, and thats what I was referring to. Its a dawm shame that BP had to go and dump a few million gallons of crude on out there.....We could've run our trucks awhile off that stuff!!!!

Yes. If you find peer reviewed literature from a sedimentary journal that proves opposite I would be more than happy to read it. And no wikipedia and nutjob websites do not count.

 

If hydrocarbons are destroyed above 150*C then how does Methane form?

 

Isn't methane a hydrocarbon? How does it form if it is destroyed at a temperature lower than it forms at?

Consider this...
-We do NOT have knowledge of ALL the oil bearing formations on earth, so we really have no idea how much there is or what percentage we've gone through already

-Oil exploration is dependant on price of product, yearly profit of oil business, and the amount of that profit being dumped into research and development...keep in mind that the oil business has been very stagnant in terms of technological advances because it had been so easy and profitable for so long, it hasn't been until lately that leaps and bounds have been made in exploration...I blame it on the "we've done it this way for the past some-odd years and it works" theory, a.k.a "the good 'ol boy" frame of mind.

-There is NOTHING wrong with pushing the need to cut dependance on crude oils or oil products...the more options we have, the better

-And politics has WAY too strong of an influence on this stuff

I'm no oil king, so my opinion is about worthless, but being in the oilfield for 2 years now, I have come to realize that what is fact and what is published are two very different things... Just my worthless two cents

 

As temperature increases more and more of the volatiles are driven off. When all the hydrogen is gone, all you have left is pure carbon, ie graphite. Sorry, should have not said ALL the hydrocarbons. However above 150* you have methane which is down to four hydrogen molecules or some types of bitumen, that is even further degraded.
