Additive is snake oil is it?

My 3 ltr TDI periodically stops at idle (several times per tankful). Add 400ml of "good" additive to a tank and it runs well with no errors or stopping for 3 to 4 more tanks then starts playing up again.

OK I agree all diesels should run on what comes out of the pump, but mine does not, and I see hundreds of threads in EU with the same problems.

Most likely the CR pump inlet valve sticking, but either it's bad fuel or a design fault.

Do you guys see many problems with Bosch CP3 CR pumps? - and in particular the fuel metering valve?

ciao

ATF is for the transmission, not for the engineUse POWER SERVICE for your engine

[QUOTE=Red_Rattler;635068] Also have any of you "Nadair" thought abt what RED ATF with do to normal TAXED diesel fuel? Try to explain that one to the tropper that dips your tank.

Three Trucks:
My 1994 Hummer with a supercharged 6.5L Diesel, Been Running Straight Filtered Used ATF, with a splash of Diesel care for 4 years and approx. 35k miles. not one fuel related problem at all. Smokes a little But the Hog runs good. I do run a 50 50 mix in the winter and try to plug it in when I can.

NO PROBLEMS

My 1999 Powerstroke; Started running the Straight ATF at 129k miles, 100% ATF in the winter also. No Need to plug in. Put off a hell of a smoke show when cold out but setteled down when she warmed up. Traded it in at 189K miles with a grenaded Tranny.....
STILL NO FUEL RELATED PROBLEMS

My 2007 Cummins, Changed line of work, Didnt have access to the ATF anymore so I started running "Non Taxed RED Fuel" Had an Abundant supply of this crap
Ran it for a good 40k miles. Never got "Dipped" by the Fuzz, Know plenty of guys who run the Red and never been "Dipped" Talked with a feller who did got bopped with a Tank full of red and it was a $211 dollar fine For the first infraction. I do believe that If I got "Dipped" and fined $211 Im still comeing out way on Top. J

Just saying I guess All the fuss about ATF Being the Devil Fuel, Its worked great for me for over 125k miles with no fuel related problems. and as far as being worried about Getting "Dipped" Screw it. Look at all the money you will save Im kind of an Outlaw And dont stress about Crap like that. Do what chas gonna do

Default in tank filter

"Change your in-tank fuel filter and check for a blocked tank vent."

Nope, It's a mechanical failure on the pump. That's what the code says on VCDS. Furthermore if I graph the demanded and actual pressures versus the inlet valve, the actual pressure drops and the ECU opens the valve but the pressure keeps dropping. Then right at the point of stall the ECU opens the valve really fast. Sometimes this catches the stall and results in another error of over pressure cos the revs jump up to 2k. This is the point where the inlet valve shot open and the pressure rises pretty quick. So for me the valve is sticking. This is a car with main stealer full service history... That is a worthless document I can tell you. The air filter inlet had so many twigs, leaves, sand (!!!) in it that the engine barely got air. When i discovered this I went ballistic at the main stealer who simply shrugged... but I digress.

The pump is giving the spec 1600bar (full throttle) without problem. It only has a problem when returning to idle. It's the inlet valve on the CP3 99% for me.

I'm saying that a tank of diesel treatment fixes it temporarily. I've repeated this 5 times, so for me diesel treatment is doing something beneficial.

I suspect crappy diesel is the root cause.

Everybody has a dad/uncle/brother/friend/coworker with a story. Anecdotes are worthless.

Change your in-tank fuel filter and check for a blocked tank vent.

You, sir, are an embarrassment to every tax-paying law-abiding citizen in the USA. You have no right to use our roads.
then why anytime i add a bottle of atf my fuel milage goes up 1-3 mpg driving the same roads, same driving style. explain that.

also explain why my uncle went through the crap he did with his pumps not using any additive and yet my friend who uses additives didnt, both of them drive them like hell. explain that.

also using farm diesel is not an "embarrassment", i had to run it one time cause i didnt have a choice that doesent mean anyone is an "embarrassment".

Try saying that to me. I'll tell you I'll make my own road.

I bought my truck off a farmer and the tank was full of red diesel, farm diesel, whatever you wish to call it. My truck ran smoother, quieter, and smoked less running on red. It also gets better mileage running red. I run it every chance I get but considering where I live, I don't worry about getting "dipped". I can get away with saying "its a farm truck, had to run her into town." The cops where I live are too lazy to pull you over for speeding. They're not going to bother pulling someone over to dip the tank.

I personally know a mechanic that runs straight filtered used ATF through his 01 VP44 pumped Cummins with absolutely no problems. He took the pump off his engine, tore it down, and said he's never seen a cleaner one in his career. The pump didn't need any work either. He took it off just to check it out.

I've thought about running a mix of used ATF or waste motor oil(WMO) as fuel in my truck. At the time, I just didn't have the money to get the stuff to properly filter the ATF and WMO. Still don't, plus I don't have the space to do it anymore either. I might mess with it sometime and see how the truck likes it or not though.

I've also considered running a quart of new ATF at fill ups, but when you have an actual additive sitting right next to it on the shelf, I'll go for it instead. I do run Power Service Diesel Supplement + Cetane Boost in my truck to help lubricate the old Stanadyne injection pump.

There are millions of rotary pump engines running raw diesel all over the world without any issues.
By raw diesel, I assume you mean basically the equivalent of red diesel here in the US which is what older, many rotary pumped(such as my IH 6.9L), diesel engines were designed to run on.

I agree with Red Rattler here
Its your rig and you will do what you want and I will do what I want
Just wanted to put my own .02 in.
