Why do you need cetane booster???

All diesel fuel today is well in the high 40's cetane level...

You might re consider Standyne...

Here is the MSDS sheet...
http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/showfile.asp?id=4079

And here is there Master MSDS listing for Standyne
http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/ppt_dfa.asp

Here is the chemical listing...

Not very good lubricant for you IP pump considering the change in ULSD...

a quart of canola oil, soy bean oil or any vegitable oil per tank of diesel (new stuff) is cheap and it will lube very well and your diesel will like it....i promise. 5 gallons can be bought for 16 bucks at Sams Even as much as one gallon per tank!

Ok here we go... Ask questions if I lose you...

It really quite simple. First take your favorite additive that you want to use in your fuel. Lets say Standyne. So now we go over to my MSDS sheet listings...

http://www.frontiernet.net/~mopar197...DS%20Links.htm <- MSDS sheets for most fuel additive products, diesel fuels, and 2 cycle oils.

Then you write down (or print the page) the chemical that are listed in the MSDS sheet.

Now go over to the chemical definition page.
http://www.frontiernet.net/~mopar197.../chemicals.htm <- Chemical Definition Page

Now click on the links to see what the chemicals are and used for. You find that most all chemicals there are used for solvents, de-greasing, paint thinners, etc. Also take notice to the flash points and auto-ignition temps of the chemicals. You find that most chemical will alter the ignition qualities of of the diesel fuel quite dramatically! Remember that diesel fuel is suppose to be a slow burning fuel.

Ok... So now what does todays diesel fuel have going for it???

http://www.cpchem.com/enu/tds_unsecu...el_summary.pdf <- Chevron/Phillips 66 Diesel Fuel summary

Take notice todays diesel fuel is a VERY HIGH CETANE LEVEL! 43-47 Cetane number. There is absolutely no reason for cetane boosters. I find that most people abuse cetane boosters and overdose the fuel. I found out from a buddy of mine he lost 10-15 HP from using a very popular cetane booster (as directed).

Cummins suggested Cetane levels...

SUMMER TIME - 40 CETANE Fuels
WINTER TIME - 45 CETANE Fuels

CETANE DEFINED - A measure of the starting and warm-up characteristics of a fuel. In cold weather or in service with prolonged low loads, a higher cetane number is desirable. Legislation dictates the Cetane index should be 40 or above.

So in the summer time you need to look for lower cetane fuels and winter time you need highier cetane fuels. So after looking at the page above there is no reason for any kind of cetane booster... But there is a very high need for lubricant!

Now since we changed from LSD then to ULSD there is a big reduction in lubricants in the fuels. The older LSD had a HFRR value of 300-350 and the new ULSD is at 520 HFRR. The HFRR number will go up when there is less lube and down when there is more lube basically. So lets your fuel is 520 HFRR valued so that means it capable of wearing on the parts up to 520 micron total (equal to 0.20 inches!!!) Wow! Thats 20 thousands of a inch wear inside of IP pump!

So this is why I use 2 cycle oil only as a additive.

So how is the performance???

I got 228/462 in stock setup (no enhancement) then got 381/826 with my Edge Comp turned up to 5x5!!!

Here is my total fuel graph over time... Remember I started using 2 cycle at 85K miles and that is right at the end of last summer.

Close up of the graph 85K foreward...

And here is the cost per mile...

In the last year I've save close to $800 dollars while using just 2 cycle oil. I reduced the cost per mile enough to make a serious savings. I used about $60-$80 bucks in 2 cycle oil. So even then I saved about $720 bucks in 1 year!

My rule of thumb is 1 ounce of oil for every 1 gallon of fuel...

So 10 gallons of fuel needs 10 ounces of oil... Really simple...
