Our M was always hard starting on 6 volt. Even with a new battery and starter it would have barely enough power to turn over to start. That was a very common weak link on a Farmall M. Did you check the starter button up on the platform? They would sometime act up too. Convert it to 12 v and be done with it.

anytime wires or starter gets hot its not getting good connection. years ago i bought a 8 volt battery and it helped pretty good but the best way is to convert to 12 volt and put a chrysler resistor on points. use can use a cheap gm alternator. you can use a oil pressure switch to excite alt if you dont have a acc switch.

Yeah, I think we are just going to go ahead and switch to 12 volt. I think we already have most of the parts from trying to gather them as we found them over the years. I have been trying to get dad to switch it for awile but he has been putting it off sense we don't use the tractor much, but I am starting to pull it when I can, so it would be nice to be able to park it on flat ground instead of a hill! Thanks for all the help so far, I appreciate it.

What you could do as well is put an extra solenoid on it a more powerful one they make the drive mechanism (sprage gear) engauge faster.Converting it to 12v is way simpler though and if you don't intend on restoring it that is the smarter desicion.

We are just going to switch it to 12 volt, but it is going to take a little bit cause neither dad or me have alot of extra money for something that is purely recreational, both have other things that are calling for our money. We have to get the starter rebuilt also, so one piece at a time till we have everything to do it! Thanks for the help.
