Since about a year after I bought my truck (2008 6.7) it has been 'whispering' out black smoke going down the highway. Went to the dealer numerous times to no avail because they couldn't replicate it. So a few weeks ago, (90,000 miles later) it started rolling some serious smoke out the tail pipe. Went back to the dealer and showed him the video I made of it smoking and he said it was the EGR butterfly hanging up and choking off the air. Also, when I told the tech that the truck had never been in regen (the honest truth) he went back in the shop and came back 20 minutes later. He said it was because I had a cracked DPF and the exhaust was bypassing the element, not allowing the ECM to see enough of a pressure differential to put it into regen. At the techs advice, I went and got a EGR/DPF delete with tuner and now I have no smoke and have been averaging 5+ more mpg's.

Here is a little update. After about 1700 miles the see dealer warning came back on and all random smoking stopped. I hooked up a code reader no codes, but cleared anyways, see dealer light went off and smoking started again. I then removed the egr valve and and butterfly cleaned the massive amounts of soot out and still smoked. So I unplugged it, no smoke, no cel, and no dealer warning. Drove 50 miles ran like a champ mpg shot up to 21mpg and intake temp dropped to below 80 degrees. Hopefully it stays like this till I get time to get all the dpf and egr delete on.

Shouldn't I get a cel with the egr valve unplugged?

I'd I don't think the truck has a tune maybe it does cause when you hook a scanner up it says egr disabled.

Mac tools scanner. Here is an update. Turns out the truck has some type of stealth delete kit. the factory dpf is hollow, so to check I unplugged all my egt sensors, and all 3 egr plugs and have been code free for 3 days. I'll post a couple pictures of the hollow dpf.
