intercooler??
im new here and this is my first diesel and this might be a dumb question to a few but but the top mount intercooler showed in the pics is air to air correct? so one tube gets hooked to turbo other to intake? if so my buddys got a stock top mount from an sti i could prob get dirt cheap
the sti inner cooler isn't big enough to disapate the heat that is generated or flow the amount of air the turbo is producing - you would be better of building a cold air intake that would draw in outside air directly through fender vent or snorkel - good luck on your project - sorry for taking so long to reply had internet issues
alright so i got an intercooler from a friend for dirt cheap. it was one of those i was at his house, saw and bought it without thinking. its off of an 03 ford ps. 3inch in/3inch out, 31in Long x 13in wide with a 3in thick core. its too wide to put underneath where a skid plate goes, the inlet/outlets hit the frame rails. its too narrow to put in the stack (between the rad and condenser) the radiator is too wide. i took the grill off to see if i could mount it in front of the condenser but no go without cutting the frame. i could do a top mount but it would stretch from the coolant resivor to the brake booster and i would need a big scoop. i really wanted to use it because it was so cheap and its huge but im out of ideas where to mount it. i could get a slimmer radiator but i dont want to sacrifice cooling efficiency. any ideas?

maybe sell the inner cooler on craigslist or ebay & use the money to buy a smaller inner cooler that would fit behind the grille - I've seen the kits that mount them by the skid plate. but think about it. it's called a skid plate for a reason. once you get an inner cooler you can save money by getting the tubing & rubber couplers from a wrecking yard. you can cut & weld the tubes to fit. from factory or aftermarket the rubber couplers are very exspensive. good luck. sorry for taking so long to reply
i think you could use a subaru intercooler with some work. it might not be the best but doable. i have a wrx and have had the ic off a few times and its pretty big. the sti is even bigger. a lot of the world rally championship rally cars use topmount ics so you can get them to cool! the subaru one is somewhat an odd set up. the one side has 2 intakes on the bottom and then one big outlet on the side. but if you use a front mount from a rice burner then mount it up top then put a hood scoop on and maby spray it with even washer fluid on a pressure switch and i bet it will be a very good upgrade!
the sti inner cooler still isn't big enough to displace the amount of heat that is created & may not be able to flow enough air & act as a restriction. also were these coolers are mounted the back side is open for better air flow which you won't have with your pu engine compartment
Mudder:
A friend of mine mounted a 96 dodge ram intercooler in his 87 daytona. "Anything is possible" is his phrase.
I'll give him the measurements of yours and see where I could fit it on mine. we're going thru this same thing, no room for the fuggin thing.
actually, that is shorter than the ram intercooler. . .
there is no way a guy could run it in the fender above the splash guard eh? the stock intake is in there, I'm sure with some cutting you could plumb it in and get enough air to it.
Just a crazy idea I came up with in about 3 seconds. probably wouldn't work but it's an empty space. probably not a big enough empty space either.
blarg, lots of useless ideas. no good ones.

. from the pics it looks like one of your tubes is in the way.
