Default is 6.0l a good way to go?

Well i need some advice im looking for a diesel truck and im looking at a 2003 6.0 its extended cab with exhaust and k&n intake for power mods and its got good wheels and tires but its got 145000 for mileage i had a 7.3l and it was bullet proof buuuut in a recent snow storm a dumb Bi@#$ hit me and totaled it this guy is asking 13,000 for the truck.

i know that it will need the new oil cooler ad possibly a tranny rebuild down the road would it be worth it because im looking for something that i can get some serious miles out of not just a money pit.

heres the story let the opinions fly!

It really depends because there were good 6.0 motors and then there were bad 6.0 motors.

Why would it need a tranny rebuild down the road? It's not a 4R100 here, the 5R110 is really strong.

What are your plans for the truck? Just a DD, you going to be towing, or going to the race track or what?

It's tough to say. See if you can get an Oasis report on it from a local dealer, that will tell you all the warranty work that has been done.

See if there are some service records of the truck as well. The 6.0 can be a great motor.

My advice, just read as much as you can about them first.

With the cost of a really nice 7.3's these days, you'd be ahead to buy a 6.0 cheap, fix it up with the necessary deletes/additions and probably still end up paying less. I'm seeing pretty nice 6.0's with ~150k on them in the $10-$15k range... You can get them way cheaper than a 7.3 now. If you buy them with the intention of doing studs/delete etc, it will be a pretty solid truck, a lot more power with just a tuner, and the trans is much stronger.

The reality is this, if you can't verify that it was well maintained, it has a real good chance of being a money pit! Hot doggin a 6.0 below ~ 190 degrees is a good way to pop a head gasket. My buddy's 2003 6.0 has blown this and that, when I asked about maintenance, well, it all made sense then.

If the trans is falling out, he probably used a bad programmer. Edge almost ripped mine out. I took the Edge out after spending $250 for a "valve body" I didn't need.

Finally, buying a used 7.3 is going to be the same way. There's a reason why these trucks get sold for cheap, someone is trying to pass on the problems to the next guy.

Is anyone aware of any numbers(miles) where the problems with the 6.0s start to show them selves.I have a 2005 6.0 pulling 15,000.lbs of RV with 18k on it. It has been well taken care of. Is there any sence in right up front doing the upgrades to the EGR cooler and the oil cooler. I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

My buddy has an 05/06 (I can't remember) that is at 300k miles now. He didn't have a single issue until 275k. Not one injector, not one headgasket, stock oil cooler, stock EGR cooler, everything.

Mine is an 06 with 93k on it and I've blown headgaskets 3 times.
