Question Tuner

I bought my truck, 2005 6.0 Powerstroke, with a banks 6 gun bundle on it, but it wasnt hooked up. i took it to a local diesel tech who knows his stuff and had to replace 2 of my injectors and the ficm. he told me the banks programmer was at fault and that also a custom sct tuner burned a bad code permanently into the ficm which ruined the injectors. he runs a quadzilla programmer, forgot which one exactly, on his 05 6.0 dually and loves it. anybody ever have these problems with a sct?

SCT doesn't burn anything permanently in, the only programmer I've heard of this happening with was early bullydog stuff. It couldn't be fixed without having it brought to Ford and completely reprogrammed.

The SCT can not even program anything into the FICM. Not even that bullydog can. Sounds like the local diesel tech doesn't know squat about 6.0 tuning.

The only way you can ruin injectors is by not having a sufficient supply of fuel. If you run a hot tune from any programmer you run the risk of fuel pressure dropping as the stock pump just can't keep up sometimes. Only way to see this is to install a fuel pressure gauge. Every 6.0 on the planet should have one.

FICM's just die on these, it's not uncommon. Usually the solder on the boards inside cracks and loses contact. There is very detailed write up's with pictures on how to test these (literally a 10 min project, including drinking a beer) and also how to fix them yourself.

Quadzilla simply doesn't have the capabilities of the SCT.

You can read around the forums and gather your own information on this. This topic has been beaten to the ground more than once.

You might also check the big powerstroke sites too, my fav is powerstrokenation.com ask around on there and see what everyone runs.

It sounds like he was blowing some smoke up your tailpipe. The SCT doesn't burn anything on your truck permanently. The FICM can be tweeked but you send it off to be done. One of Fords later flashes was killing FICMs and they do just go bad as do the injectors.
How does the truck run now with the new injectors and FICM? If it is running good, then take the Banks stuff off and do some reading and ask some questions. These forums have a ton of information if you can ignore the trolls. Educate yourself before you go spending money *****-nilly. Post back and tell us how you want to use your truck, Are you towing a trailer? Plowing snow? Are you just using it as a car to get you around? Do you want a hot-rod? A drag truck? A sled-puller? A dyno queen? Knowing what you want will help get you the best advice for you.

Welcome to the chaos!

Also just to add a little mix to this... the phalanx programmer was capable of FICM tuning through the OBD port, but I haven't heard anything past the beta-stage testing that a few members on the ORG were doing, and that was well over a year ago. Probably over two years ago. Plus it was over $1k for the programmer and only one person was writing tunes at the time. Sounded like a pretty cool setup, but doesn't seem like it ever went anywhere.

Yeah I think they are getting close on the remote programing for the FICM. It seems to me on the FICM tuning some people rave about it and some don't notice a difference. I think its one of those things you spend money but it still looks the same, its not shiny and you don't feel a huge new burst of power so you feel let down.

okay i bought the truck a year ago. the 6 gun bundle was not plugged in. so i plugged it in and it completely shut the truck off while i was driving. mid turn at that. sooo i unplugged it. it ran okay for a couple months and 2 injectors went bad. then the ficm needed replaced. so i fixed it all and it runs fine. now.. i have to let off the throttle for it to shift gears unless i want it damn near redlining for a second or two before it shifts on its own, in the first 3 gears. now my previous vehicles were a standard 5 spd 95 mustang gt and a standard 5 spd 2002 mustang gt. sooo the auto tranny and the diesels are all new to me. i dont tow, plow, or pull anything. i havent and dont plan on goin to the drag strip. but i have had fast cars and i have a fast bike so i must say i have a heavy foot. so fast is good. i want the truck fast and i want to leave clouds of black smoke in all these little hot headed kids driving around here. i have a 4 inch tb exhaust with magnaflow muffler and deleted cat and i have never seen any smoke outta my truck. any advice is appreciated and dont mean to offend any of you ppl that just look for ppl like me to run over. thanks in advance. and if it makes any difference right now the truck has a 4 inch lift with 35s

First thing is, asking for smoke on the forums will get you nothing but grief. Black smoke is just unburned fuel and unused power. We have all blown some, even the guys that will flame you for asking but smoke is a dirty word. That said, moving on. Just take the Banks stuff off, go with the SCT and custom tunes (several vendors on here will set you up) get some guages to get started. The SCT is the ONLY programmer that will tune your transmission. There are several other things you will have to address at some point: EGR delete and headstuds ect. Also these motors fussy, use good oil, stock filters and change it on time its very important. Do alot of research, check the other forums the mods for this engine are pretty standard now.
