And by shaving down the adapter for an hx40 do you mean just cut part of the end off cause it was too long or was the diameter wrong?

Thank you for this it helped me get a better visual on how to do mine,
the bolt pattern is exactly the same, just have to drill the two
stud holes out to fit the he351 studs. its no big deal and took
me all of 10 minutes.

for the downpipe, i cut only the flange off, then sanded the inner side
of the pipe, to be sure it was nice and even, then welded the
he351 flange right back to it. you can see in the below pic where
it was welded. once i got the turbo installed, the downpipe fit
like a glove, it all lined up perfectly. reason you have to do this is
because of the tiney exhaust outlet on the 1st gen turbo, vs. the
bigger outlet on the he351.

let me know if you have any other questions.

check out where the weld is on the dp, its exactly where i cut off
the original flange.
