Default he351 swap on a 92 i/c --> install info

just finished up the swap. overall very easy swap. there
are a few things that you will have to make a personal
decision on, depending on your budget.

i got a 351cw turbo free from a buddy that upgraded to a
bb turbo. also bought a new stock manifold as the one
that was on there was really rusted out by the firewall due
to the poor engineering job water shedding at the back
of the hood.

here is a shot of the turbos side by side. you can obviously
see the huge difference on the exhaust housing side.

the install was easy. i went ahead and mounted the 351 onto the new manifold
before bolting it up ( per pic above ). this made it easier in my mind to get the
turbo fitted squarely and all bolts tight. you do have to drill out the manifold
holes to accept the studs that are on the 351 turbo. got the turbo and manifold
mounted up to the block which was fairly easy other than the weight and how
bulkly the combo is. anyway, got it all installed with new gaskets too. i did clock
the exhaust side so i could make sure the oil lines were lined up. also bought a
silocone tube from diesel auto power to make the compressor --> intercooler
connection. that also took a bit of fabbing as its really made for a 351 swap
on either a 2nd gen, or a 1st gen with a 2nd gen intercooler. either way, i made
it work.

next thing i had to figure out was the oil feed and return line. what i found out
when getting the turbo / mani put on, was that the return line bolts right
up to the new turbo, which was a big relief. the feed line connections are way
different from 1st to 3rd gen, so what i did was have a high pressure hose shop
that was local, make me up a custom oil feed line with the correct fittings on
each end. this cost me $80. i didnt know any other way to make it work, so
i thought it was a good trade off.

next thing to worry about was the downpipe. what i did was buy a 1st gen 4"
dp, and also bought a he351 flange from diesel auto power. i shaved off the
stock flange and had my buddy @ krawltex weld the new flange on. the dp fit
on the 351 perfectly and the dp fit overall 100%. clearance was good, so no
issues. still need to complete the exhaust past the dp, but thats no biggie.

a few other things i had to deal with was the wastegate assembly. i decided to
run the turbo with no wastegate, as i have no fuel mods, so its not an issue.
i tack welded the wastegate shut and bought an ats style solenoid plug to keep
everything nice and plugged off.

here are a few pics - any questions, fire away.

install complete - with no fueling mods i see 20 - 21 lbs of boost at wot. was barely
seeing 12 lbs with the big 21cm stock turbo.

ive heard its one of the better stock turbos. it has a 9cm housing and a 60mm compressor wheel. the upgrade kit for the 35's is the 60mm wheel and uses the factory 12cm housing.

When I put mine on, I changed the oil line fittings from the h1c to the 351. It worked and I didn't have to get anything made!!!
