How about where the turbo meets the intake horn? The super b special is v band clamped and the stocker in the 89 is just hose clamped to the intake horn...

so my understanding is that my 92 IC would be a non waste gated turbo, but the HX35 is a wastegate. what do you do about it?

You can probably just leave the wastegate unhooked

Just watch your boost, and if you're running it over 35 psi or so consistently, you might want to get it hooked up.

i have a hy 35 on mine and it seems to work well.

does anyone think it would be worth while to swap to a hx35?

There's probably no need to swap out the whole turbo the only difference that I know of is the 9cm ex. housing versus the 12cm on the HX35. If your EGTs are running too high, you might try freeing up the flow by just switching out exhaust housings. But as long as it works fine now, I wouldnt worry bout it. Its probably not going to help you make any more power, it would just make your spool up time slightly slower (bad) and lower your EGTs (good).
