Look what I did with some tiny little heim joints:

Can't wear out and fall off like the stock ball end unit.

I believe the total cost was probably not much more than a stock replacement, even including the odd tap I did not have.

 

looks good. whats the chain for connecting to the front throttle bracket for?

 

That goes to a hand throttle, otherwise known as a poor man's high idle or cruise control - it's the one on the left:
