Default A-1 stud install

I just bought a set of A-1 studs... What kind of tap do I need to install them?

I know they sell it on their web site... But I am hoping to find one locally... The web site says a 12 x 1.75, but I was wondering specifically if a standard tap would work or if I needed a longer one...

You need a 12x1.75 BOTTOM tap, not sure how long it needs to be. Maybe BC847 will chime in and let us know....

I would just order teh one from A-1 that way you know for a fact it will work.

A standard threading tap is not the same as a bottoming tap. See image below . . .

Threads all the way to the bottom of the bolt bore are required to accommodate the full length of the stud threads.

Further, chasing of the existing threads is needed as a minimum as the bores under the rocker pedestals are full of oil residue like those at the exhaust side are often coked. There's a lot of mess in there . . . .

A standard length bottoming tap will work just fine (with the head off the block).

Thanks guys... I was aware of the difference between a bottoming tap and a tapered tap. I was just unsure if a standard length tap would be fine or not...

I bought a 12x1.75 bottom tap at NAPA for under $7, sure beats the 20+ that A1 wanted
