Default over drive in a automatic?

what is the over drive controlled by? Is it a electrical thing? I have every gear except that one. It's only on certain occasions i don't have it but now i'm not sure if i'll get it back?

im pretty sure if i remember correctly the overdrive is controlled by the computer which bases its shift pattern from the throttle position sensor, the engine speed sensor, and possibly the vehicle speed sensor (i think thats the 3rd one). there is also normally an overdrive off button used as well located inside the truck
