getrag locked up
well, it appears the input and the out put shafts have decided to become one.....where is the best place to cut the shaft so i can get them out of the case with out ruining the rest of the gears ??? I pulled the top off and everything looks good,it will shift in all gears but will not move, but will idle in neutral.I may just be able to replace the shafts and some bearings, if i can get it apart respectfully.....and yes the fluid was low
I was hauling about 2 cords of wood in 4 low second gear (due to bad weather) down a steep grade when they became one...the back tires skidded about 3 feet...but the front drive line did not fair so well. and all of us headed for the front window, luckily it stopped and did not become a runaway, or we may have ended up over the bank and in the local news paper any thoughts would be of some help....

I would think that you could probably take the front input bearing retainer off and use a gentle pursuader to knock it loose. I will check my Getrag PDF tonight. If it comes down to it, just take a torch and cut through the input shaft gear close to the front of the case. I would think it would be best to get all the bearings off the counter shaft to drop it down and give you some space. I rebuilt mine recently and it had broken all the teeth off the input. I lucked out since mine wasn't seized.

I will try to separate them first, but I can't imagine that it will because it locked up tight enough to stop that truck like that, It looks good inside other than it doesn't work..... I considered the torch, but I'm afraid that a torch will be too messy,( but it may come to that). I am thinking that a zip wheel on a die grinder and cut across the input shaft near the sinkro like in the pic, through that gear near the bearing would probably be a good choice also. I was hoping someone has already done this, I hope it comes apart but If I have to cut it, then I will take some pics in case it works.

well was able to separate them....with some heavy persuasion, inside it looked pretty good considering it locked up...the output shaft was fine, it had an inter race to protect the shaft, that needed some heat to come off. the input shaft did not fair so well, because there is no outer race to remove..it is part of the input. i just rebuilt that tranny a year ago so i didn't see any reason to rebuild the whole thing again, so i put a new bearing and a used input from a 2wheel drive tranny, it is pretty simple to rebuild, this time I put 5 quarts in it.....it completely covers the lower gears and is up to the main shaft on the rear bearing, now if it doesn't leak i'm good to go....now back to cutting fire wood ( It was low on oil, lesson learned, lucky no one was killed and was a cheap fix)
