you can do alot to a cummins by "bolting on parts" and never pulling the motor apart, a cam that dosent need flycut pistons is a good idea and will save money, might as well plan on a copperhead gasket also.

I know sometime in the next 2 years I'm gonna want to rebuild this engine just for the fact that for that my kid will be in school that long and has access to all the equipment to do the rebuild and machining work. I won't ever have that conveniance again. So even if I buy a spare motor to have him work on, I know I want to get one done. I'm one of those guys that don't get rid of trucks till they are completely dead in the middle of the road so at somepoint I'm gonna need it. I'm just tryin to get an idea of what to have done and a general price range for parts.

are you set on a vp engine? because i'm sure for the money you spend there you can get a newer common rail engine with a 48re, and that would be one bad machine

I'm a happy VP-44, manual shift owner. I know how to work on these 2nd gen trucks and that's been a long road for me, not lookin forward to startin over with a new engine. I'd like to pack a 6 speed in the truck one of these days since I'm runnin the 5 speed right now but I know a built auto is way out of my price range.

if your staying with a 5/6 speed, your price just went way down, just throw some billet shafts and twin disk behind it and call it good.....

If you want to race, stay with the 5 speed. Easier to shift fast.

I'm no racer. This is a farm truck and daily driver that we like to have fun with. I leave the racin to the kid. These are the racers. His progression through the years, the first picture is 6 years old, the second picture is 16 years old and the third is his current at 21 years old.
