when it comes to finding the correct cam for your engine, there are many factors to look at.

1.intake/exhaust centerline
2.lobe separation angle
3.overlap (the good thing about a diesel engine, overlap doesn't hurt the horsepower because of the low end torque
4.valve duration
5.valve lift

I have machined some of my own cams and had some god things and some bad things.

without going back to the books it will be kinda hard to explain.
there is alot of information on the web of how people ground there cam and how they take all of the above into consideration, if you would like to learn all about machining and how it works, I can tell you what books to get.

I will not post anything more about this because there is alot of people with opinions and that usually leads to an argument, you can call Pittsburgh power, PDI and there is another company who ground their own cams for a profession and they have some really good people working there that will help you in you decision making.
