2001/1999 Cummins cam gears
Question for the Cummins gearheads. I have installed a 1999 in my 2001, all electronics have been used from the 2001.(engine runs great) but I get a cam sensor code, and after 10 seconds my tachometer stops working. so this puts my engine to the typical bad cam sensor run mode. Is there a difference in the 2001 cam gear due to the fact this engine does not use a crank shaft sensor I have a 2001 cam gear, but I really don't feel like pulling the front of the engine down if this is not the problem.
any input will be much appreciated.
PS. things tested:
yes I have the needed 5 volts at the plug.
yes I did flash my tach to make sure its picking up correctly

OK Gearheads, I found the rat in the wood pile. Not from calling Cummins tech support not through Dodge dealers. I got tired of the unknown and just pulled down the front of the 2001 engine (blown up) and removed the cam. then pulled down the front of my 99(running in truck) and then it all became very clear why my 99 engine would not give my 2001 computer the correct tone signal to operate the cam/crank signal. the 2001 cam gear is in fact the same. With the exception of a triggering wheel bolted to the back side of the gear. the 99 is just a gear. so the 2001 computer was waiting for the correct tone from the cam sensor but never could get it. it simply got nothing but a TDC signal. I wanted to share this with the Cummins world, no one should have to go through what I just did to find out something that should be common knowledge with most any reputable dodge dealer/ shop. Love the engine, hate the control system dodge has put on such an amazing engine.

im sure there is another tread about this but i cant find it iv done the opposite i have and 01 in my 00 and its giving me a cam sensor code p0341 tach works for about 5 seconds on start up then dies have no power will that ring on the back of the cam gear have the same effect on the 00 computer? thank any insight would be great iv been beating my head around this for awhile
OK, here you go, a 2001 can nor cam backing plate will work on anything but a 2001. it is about an 18th of an inch difference and will let the tachometer come up work for about 15 seconds, then fail. and your engine will be "safe mode" you will have to use your cam backing plate. good luck.
