I will say what I know. Everything stated above is beyond dispute. If a person is looking to buy a new 35/40 It's not a very good bang for the buck.


For $75... Its a good upgrade and would be great for 350 wheel HP.

 

So lets dump a situation at this bunch!

So here is a situation.
You have a brand new 35, and a brand new 40 in front of you. You have a truck that just gets a trailer to tow. Highway miles, long distance. You can do what ya like with the 2 units. Stack, hybrid, just one. What do you do and why? Millage is important, passing power is to. Budget takes it all for importance.

 

It costs way more to do twins, so not sure why that option is even listed. The new wheel/housing for a hybrid is going to run around the same money as a DP, so the choice is obvious: HX40.

 

Ok. I was just trying to see situations if you had the ability to. What would be the best bang.

I have the 35 in the truck, 40 on the shelf. both holsets. I do aircraft parts so access to balance equipment and the team here that does them ive seen doing there supra and import turbo's all the time along with alot of aircraft impellers. Its just a matter of a 30$ rebuild kit and what would be better option. Hybrid, 40 as is, or im really better off selling the 35 and 40 for an s300?

 

I have a HX35W on my 5.9 now but I have seen a few threads talking about building A hybrid 35. I'm going to be rebuilding the turbo soon anyway due a oil leak on the compressor side of the turbo. If some one could hook me up with a good parts list it will definitely be appreciated.

 

High Tech Turbo Products and Upgrades

 

Without knowing more about your goals and HP you plan on supporting there is not enough information to make a good decision.

If you plan on doing 350HP, I would modify the exhaust housing on the hx35 (its gates only the front 3 cylinders) and run it as is, sell the hx40 and buy new tires.

If you plan on 400-450HP more performance oriented (slower spool up but reduced drive pressure) the HX40 has an advantage (lots of versions of hx40 and super 40 wheels, turbine housing options, cost for downpipe as well)

If you wanted quick spooling and 375-400HP sell both and get a k27,

If you want better performance over 400HP sell both and get a modified s300 box unit. They can be had for $600 and support 600HP.

Not a fan of cannibalizing 2 good turbos to make one that still has deficiencies (unless 350HP is you max goal or you are okay with high temps, short turbo life and high drive pressure.)

Compounds using your stock hx35/ s464 can be had for $2000 with the turbo and piping. This would spool super quick and support 450-500HP nicely. Excellent towing set up!

 

I realize this thread is old, but I had an hx35, bought an s300 62/14 ( htt ) modified compressor wheel, there was very little difference. With the auto I was completely happy with it, I put a 5 speed manual in it, ( for pulling a trailer )and now it is horrible pulling. It will completely blacken the road. the spool has left the building until about 25lb boost then it starts to take off. the pyro...ya I backed the screw out (4 ) turns so my guess, i need a smaller exhaust and a bigger compressor like 66/12 I don't think there is a magic turbo, but surly someone has been down this road before, with no trailer it spools great, still a bit warm but controllable, thanks

 

That's the nice thing about towing with an auto in an over-fueled truck: You only need to spool it once.

 

Haha.. that is correct, especially headed over Dimond lake. .it's up hill for 2 1/2 hours.
