Yes, actually that IS what most people do >99% of the time, even towing. And yes, Dodge got the trans cooling figured out pretty well in the last of the 4spd and later autos they installed behind the Cummins.

Well, I guess the cooling system needs to be designed for the 1%, then...because that's when the extreme heat is generated.

Most of the transmissions I build get the living crap worked out of them! I have found the stock cooling systems to be adequate in some cases, but if you're towing extreme loads, with a modded tranny and converter, in hot weather, it leaves a bit to be desired. A good, stacked plate aux. cooler, in place of the original, will improve the situation tremendously.

Interesting. I don't tow at all with this truck, but do run into heavy summer stop & go traffic once in a while.
I do, however, daily drive it in some pretty cold winter temperatures.
is the consensus "lose the exchanger" or "keep it" ?
Non lockup a518.

There's your answer right there. The liquid-to-liquid exchanger works both ways, and for good reason. If you think you have an excess heat problem you might want to consider engine cooling for maintenance as well. Maybe add an extra trans cooler. But under no circumstances would I ever bypass the exchanger. That device pulls out trans heat even at operating temp, because the engine temp is going to be lower than the trans temp under load. It's a system, not a bunch of unrelated parts.

Here's the part I don't get - about winter usefulness.
The converter heats the ATF in winter far quicker than the engine heats coolant, so I'm not sure how the heat exchanger gets ATF up to operating temp quicker.

Then go for it! Do whatever you like.

Well, trying to nail down the theory behind all this.

Not worried about engine cooling. My first gen coolant capacity has been right at about 6 gallons these past few months.

I also run a Webasto diesel fired coolant heater so warming coolant come deep winter isn't an issue.

Just hazy about what plumbing the liquid-liquid heat exchanger back in will do for me, as the space it occupied is now filled in by a primary N14 turbo.

Dynamic - you the same feller who advocated the Superior shift kit instead of the TransGo? If so, it has worked well with more consistent "holding".
