HELP
Looking for what would cause of a white gray smoke. It is not all the time but at idle and is Farley heavy and just started.
Some back ground,I got the truck just around a year ago.And had 88 k miles and don`t have 90 on it yet.It is a 2004 5.9. By some things I had found it looks as if it has been ran Farley hard and not maintained to well.I have converted all lubricants to AMSOIL and added a bypass system, changed fuel filter,INJEN cold air intake. Truck still seems to run and pull just fine but this smoking thing is got me worried.
Any suggestion would be appreciated. As I really like this one and hope to make it last.
I know there is a lot of diesel wise folks out there.
THANKS and GOD BLESS
THE REDDOG

How's the coolant level? Check the oil level every morning before you start the truck as well for a few days, just to make sure it's not using oil.

White/gray smoke is typical of a hung injector pushing a lot of fuel into the cylinder, and the fuel not burning (in cold weather, its can be seen during "white stacking"). If its fuel, it should smell like HOT diesel fuel and irritate your eyes bad...coolant should smell very sweet or not at all.

The fact it clears up above an idle, could be an indication of a cracked injector tip, not leaking real bad yet.
