Hey madmanwithmouse.

Have you looked at the GDP 2-micron filtration setup? While it does not have a water separator, it is a nice fuel filter system. Richard has installation information on his site.

http://www.glacierdieselpower.com

I installed this system on my truck, also got the big line kit when I got the 2-micron filter. It is doing it's job, I have had NO problems with injectors. Goes in-line between the stock fuel filter canister and the cp3.

Just another option. I do not live where there is a lot of moisture in the fuel, in fact have never gotten water when draining off the stock canister. I like being able to catch the 7-micron particles with the stock canister and then all that remains are the smaller particles for the 2-micron filter.

ya I found the http://www.glacierdieselpower.com setup, but I didnt see the specs, thanks. I wonder how it would work with a say 10micron before the pump, then a 1-2micron filther after it. Also theres not alot if moisture here, but ive had to drain water from a truck once and a few tractors.

The reason you don't see moisture is because of the system's design...

Having the pump UPSTREAM of the filter is bad. As water-laden fuel hits the pump, it is emulsified. The emulsified fuel/water then enters the fuel filter where it simply passes the filter media and heads for the engine.

I ran a little experiment with my Aux tank that proved that (I run a similar type pump), I can set it to a circulating system...it was set up as tank-pump-water knockout-filter-tank. A little water turned 6 gallons of diesel into a big yellow foamy mess that passed right through a true water-separating filter (FS1251, advertised like it might be similar to a Racor). After I figured it out, I reversed the lines (tank-water knockout-pump-filter-tank) and caught all but a little bit of that water after a few days...it took about 4 days for the emulsified fuel to finally start to "un" emulsify.

Just a little FYI for those of you thinking you run "dry" fuel.

I caught more water with my FASS on my 2004.5 in the first month I owned it than I ever saw in my 99 in over 200k. The FASS is set up correctly...water separator-pump-filter...it catches water. Now I have my aux tank and knockout...I very rarely see any water in the FASS because I prefilter ALL my fuel before it hits my main tank.

And as an added bonus, I have seen a trend in the ULSD that seems to indicate it might be hygroscopic. Since I have been running it, I'm seeing a lot more water, especially in the winter.

I like living where the humidity is almost always low... Never had any water in my filters - even on my old 12V which didn't have a intank fuel pump.

Umm, the water separator is on the suction side, the particulate is on the pressure side if I'm not mistaken???

I loosened the particulate filter to get a prime, it barfed fuel out all over before I got the filter tightened.

But your lift pump is still between the tank and filter...I wasn't talking 3rd gen in general.

Just in case anyone needs the part number for the Baldwin 5-micron filter that goes in the factory canister I thought I'd add it to this thread. Baldwin P/N PF7977.

I buy them by the case at http://www.bfwebexpress.com/catalog.asp
