Question...have stock truck. Picking up a Bully Dog Triple Dog tomorrow. If I leave the cat on and the stock muffler what is this gonna do? I know it'll cut down on smoke and all that jazz, but is it gonna cause this thing to run super hot? Don't want a **** ton of noise in the cab either...so...to make it run a little cooler, do I take off the muffler or the cat? Or both? Any help?" Any ideas?

I know someone's gonna say new exhaust or high flow muffler, but that's not an option right now. Probably will be in the near future, but....the wife has put the handcuffs on for the time being.

Need gauges first to see where your at. Then a programmer.

 

Most guys I talked to ran two muffers to get the low end power back they lost cutting out the cat.

I hear a lot of guys running stright pipe, but maybe there not worried about low end torque, or maybe there another way around it.

 

Diesel Power magazine did a "Cat or no Cat?" style article a few months ago. They showed actual numbers for HP and torque, and surprisingly there wasn't much difference.

Now will a muffler and cat reduce smoke? No, it won't. The purpose of the cat is to help remove/reduce emissions, and the muffler to reduce noise.

Black smoke is hot unburned diesel, whereas white smoke is cold unburned diesel (usually caused by low ignition temps due to a bad or disconnected grid heater, or for engines with glow plugs going south). If you have a smoke issue, then something else is going on like overfueling, broken/blown nozzle, etc.

Definately get some gauges before you do anything else.

But isn't that done at higher RPM's, I'll have to go back and check my back copies of Power Diesel, I missed that one, I was just going by people driving to work everyday.

 

More RPM's would mean more flow, so if they didn't have a HP/torque benefit running it on the dyno there won't be a benefit for a daily driver.

Really though, if you're worried about EGT's then spend a few bucks and get a gauge for it. You never know, your temp could be a lot lower than you think.
